Ontario families cross-shopping three-row vehicles this year keep circling back to one question: is a hybrid minivan worth stepping up from a V6? For 2027, Kia gives that question a simpler answer.
The Carnival lineup gains a new LX HEV trim, a fresh way to start a hybrid Carnival without climbing straight to a pricier grade. Here is what changed for 2027, what stayed familiar, and what it means if you are comparing trims at Plaza Kia.
What’s New on the 2027 Carnival
The headline change is the LX HEV itself. It gives shoppers who want the hybrid powertrain a lower starting point in the Carnival Hybrid range, instead of requiring a jump to a higher-equipped grade just to get the drivetrain.
A handful of other updates round out the model year:
- New LX HEV trim added to the Carnival Hybrid range
- Redesigned steering wheel, standard across the lineup
- Lane Following Assist 2 and Hands-On Detection, standard
- Highway Driving Assist 2 added to the SX trim
- Cupholders resized from XL to L for a better fit with everyday drinkware
None of these are flashy on their own. Together, they tighten up the parts of the Carnival that owners touch every day: the wheel in their hands, the lane centring on a highway commute, and the cupholder that finally fits a normal-sized coffee.
How the Hybrid System Actually Works
The Carnival HEV pairs a Gamma II 1.6L turbo four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and an electric drive motor. The gas engine makes 177 hp on its own, the motor adds 72 hp, and together they produce 242 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.
That is a different feel from the Carnival’s 3.5L V6, which makes 288 hp and 260 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic. The V6 gets to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds; the hybrid takes 9.3 seconds. The trade is efficiency: the hybrid’s combined fuel economy of 7.2 L/100 km beats the V6’s 11.3 L/100 km by a wide margin.
The hybrid system changes how the Carnival rides and corners too, through the electric motor rather than the engine alone. Paddle shifters let the driver adjust regenerative braking through three levels in ECO and SMART modes, and a long press on the right paddle toggles Smart Regen on or off. A feature called E-Ride uses the drive motor’s braking and drive logic to smooth out bumps, while E-Handling uses the same motor to sharpen cornering response.

What Stayed the Same

The Carnival is still built as a minivan first: a steel unibody with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear, eight-passenger seating standard, and a removable second row for hauling gear instead of people. That layout does not change for 2027.
The base safety suite carries over too. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist for cars, pedestrians and cyclists, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist remain standard, alongside front and rear parking sensors. The 2027 changes add to that foundation with LFA 2 and Hands-On Detection rather than replacing it.
Interior tech follows the same split as before: a bending-type display with a 4-inch cluster and 12-inch touchscreen is standard, while EX and higher grades step up to a curved 12.3-inch cluster paired with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. An 11-inch head-up display and multi-zone voice recognition, which can tell a second-row passenger’s window request from a front-seat one, round out the cabin’s tech story.
How LX HEV Fits in the Hybrid Range
LX HEV is now the door into Carnival Hybrid ownership. It carries the six-speed hybrid transmission and shift-by-wire gear selector that every HEV grade shares, along with base 17-inch wheels and the standard bending-type display rather than the curved screen reserved for EX and up.
Moving up the Hybrid range adds equipment gradually rather than all at once. Remote Smart Parking Assist, for example, does not show up until SX HEV and SX+ HEV.

For a buyer who wants the hybrid drivetrain but not every option box checked, LX HEV means skipping straight to the efficient powertrain instead of paying for features that add cost without changing the driving experience.
What This Means for Ontario Drivers
The hybrid’s 172 mm of ground clearance, 10 mm more than the V6’s 162 mm, matters on the kind of rutted cottage-road or construction-detour driving that shows up on summer trips around the province. The trade is towing: the hybrid tops out at 3,000 lbs (1,361 kg) versus 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) for the V6, so a family regularly pulling a heavier trailer has a reason to stay with the gas engine.
Day to day, the standard LFA 2 and Hands-On Detection make highway commuting less tiring by keeping the Carnival centred in its lane through curves. SX adds Highway Driving Assist 2, which can shift the Carnival’s path within the lane around a close neighbouring vehicle and change lanes automatically when the driver holds the wheel with the turn signal on.
None of this turns the Carnival into a gadget on wheels. It is still a minivan built around seating people and hauling their stuff, with the tech there to make the commute and the road trip less stressful rather than to be the point of the vehicle.
