Charging at home already costs you electricity. Variablegrid Plus is a Kia Canada program that pays some of it back, and Ontario EV owners can sign up through a Kia dealership.
Here are the questions buyers ask most, answered in plain terms.
Who Qualifies for Variablegrid Plus?
What is Variablegrid Plus?
It is a 3-year subscription, built on the federal Clean Fuel Regulation program, that returns $0.10 per kWh for at-home EV charging. The Clean Fuel Regulation requires gasoline and diesel producers and importers to gradually lower the carbon intensity of their fuels through 2030. Fuel companies can meet it by getting drivers into EVs, which is where these rewards come from.
Who is eligible?
You need to own an eligible Kia EV and enrol at an EV-certified Kia dealership. You also need a Variablegrid home charger, either one you already have or one you buy through the dealership. The rewards follow eligible home charging, so the charger is the key requirement.
How long can you sign up?
The subscription is offered from now until 2030, and each enrolment runs for 3 years.
How Do You Enrol and Start Earning?

Do you have to change how you charge?
No. Billing stays the same, and so does when and how you charge. Eligible charging activity is tracked through the Variablegrid system, so your normal routine is what earns the reward.
What does the Variablegrid charger do?
Its Energy Management System watches real-time energy use in your home and adjusts power to the charger based on the capacity available. That lets older homes add Level-2 charging without costly upgrades to bring more power into the house. If you buy the charger and management system through a Kia dealership together with the 3-year subscription, you can save up to $350 upfront on the hardware.
How Much Can You Earn, and How Do You Get Paid?
What does a real year look like?
Kia’s worked example uses an EV4 driven 20,000 km a year. That works out to 3,600 kWh of home charging, or up to $360 paid out yearly. The estimate is based on an EV4 Wind Premium FWD.
Why might your total differ?
Rewards depend on charging activity and how the vehicle is used. Driving style, acceleration and braking habits, speed, vehicle age and condition, temperature, weather, traffic, AWD or four-wheel-drive use, air conditioning and powered accessories all change how much energy you use. A lighter-footed commuter and a heavy-load winter driver will not see the same number.
When can you withdraw?
Rewards build up in your Variablegrid account. Once the balance reaches $50, you can withdraw the funds.
Quick Answers
- Reward rate: up to 10¢ per kWh of eligible home charging
- Term: 3-year subscription, offered through 2030
- Enrol at: an EV-certified Kia dealership
- Charger: an existing or newly purchased Variablegrid charger is required
- Hardware savings: up to $350 upfront with the subscription and charger bundle
- Payout: withdraw once your account reaches $50
Is It Worth Setting Up Before You Buy a Charger?

If you already own a Variablegrid charger, you can enrol and start earning on the charging you do anyway. If you do not, the bundle is the better route: the upfront hardware saving and the subscription come together in one visit.
The program suits homeowners in older houses most. The charger manages power around your existing electrical capacity, so a panel upgrade may not be part of your plan. Kia also notes that customers purchasing a Kia EV can include the Variablegrid charger cost in their vehicle financing.
Turning Home Charging into Rewards in Ontario
Variablegrid Plus pays you for charging you already do: an eligible Kia EV, a Variablegrid charger, a 3-year subscription, and a $50 payout threshold. Your habits, not your billing, decide how much you collect.
Visit Plaza Kia in Richmond Hill to enrol, ask about the charger bundle, and book a test drive in a Kia EV.
