The Sportage has been an important part of Canadian drivers’ lifestyles for decades. The 2022 lineup delivers intelligent tech, a bold design, generous standard features, and much more.

Since standing the test of time has come easy for the Sportage, it competes closely with other makes and models in the segment. Here, we compare it to the 2022 Ford Escape.

The 2022 Kia Sportage puts on the warranty

Kia adds even more value to the Sportage through a generous warranty program. Most vehicle manufacturers don’t have as much trust in their products, but Kia delivers with a 5-year/100,000 km Comprehensive Warranty that covers virtually all the vehicle. Add the Powertrain Warranty of the same length that covers the engine, transmission, axles and more, and you have the makings of a serious peace of mind.

The Ford Escape’s warranty isn’t as inspiring. The Escape’s Basic (bumper-to-bumper) Warranty lasts just 3 years/60,000 km, which is years short of the Sportage’s comparable warranty. It’s also important to have reliable emissions systems, and the Sportage has an Emission Components Warranty that covers 8 years/130,000 km. However, the Escape covers its emissions equipment for only 2 years/40,000 km.

The 2022 Kia Sportage offers great performance

The Sportage features a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that generates a solid 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque–a segment sweet spot. This powertrain is standard in most models, and it is acclaimed for its quiet operation versus the Ford’s powertrains. All-gas Ford Escape trims include a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that also produces 181 horsepower. The Sportage and Escape also offer a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine for their top-end models.

However, the real differences begin in handling and drivetrain response.  The Sportage features a six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic and drive mode select. If you want a little more feel and input with your vehicle, this is a preferred alternative to manual shift driving. Several industry critics cite the Sportage’s smooth ride as one of several strengths. On the contrary, the Ford Escape’s eight-speed transmission was cited by Kelley Blue Book as harsh.
